228. Chenango Blues Fest

During the summer in Syracuse you can pretty much guarantee 1 of 2 things… 1) There will be a cultural Festival or 2) There will be a music festival.

bluesfestThis weekend, it’s the Blues Fest. The festival is jam packed with the sounds of local blues bands. There’s a variety of different bands, check them out here.

Friday night’s show is Free (!!!!) And Tickets for Saturday are $20 in advance or $30 at the door. In Syracuse, you can buy them at The Sound Garden.

This event brings out a lot of people, it’s a great opportunity to make some friends, enjoy some live music, and take in the last few remaining drops of the summer season. They’re going to have lots of awesome food too! And a personal favorite, Mercer’s Wine Ice Cream!!!

Tip: At this event you can bring your own lawn chairs!

Location: Chenango County Fair grounds

226. Dancin’ In The Park

More live music for ya!

dancing in the parkLooks like we’ve got something almost every night of the week at this point…and lets enjoy it, the Fall is creeping in and we won’t be able to enjoy outdoor activities past sunset much longer!

Dancin’ In the Park is a summer concert series in North Syracuse at Lonergan Park on Route 11. They host a variety of really awesome bands, and tonight they’ve got a local favorite, Dan Elliot & The Montereys.

There’s only 1 performance left after this week so make sure you head down to check it out before it’s too late! Next week they’ve got Mario DeSantis Orchestra, which from what I’ve heard is absolutely amazing!

Concerts start at 6 and run until 8pm, perfect for an evening out with some friends. The concerts are free, so there’s nothing standing in your way of having a great time!

They also have local food vendors that set up and you can purchase meals. Local restaurants like Barbieri’s, Bella Domani and more! This is definitely something to check out!

Tip: As with all summer music concerts, it’s best if you bring some chairs or a blanket to sit on!

location: Lonergan Park, Rt 11/North Main St (right behind Stickley Furniture)

217. Shakespeare In The Park

There’s excitement everywhere in Syracuse these days. So many fun things to do, so little time!

How are you planning on spending the last few weeks of summer?

Another fun little gem I found while researching for 365 Things Syracuse is Shakespeare in the Park.

shakespeare in the park

Shakespeare in the Park is exactly what it sounds like…some really talented actors performing Shakespeare…in a park. Thornden park, to be specific.

This years production is of the comedy/romance, A Winter’s Tale. This is a free event in the park! Cool! The shows will be August 8-11 and August 15-18 starting at 5:30pm, Sunday shows starting at 2pm.

This sounds like a really cool way to incorporate the beautiful scenery of Thornden Park, the arts and the community. I will definitely be checking this out!

Tip: This event is held in the ampitheater section at Thornden Park, bring your own seats if you don’t want to sit on rocks or grass!

location: Thornden Park the park is located between Ostrom Avenue, Madison Street, and South Beech Street

213. Canine Carnival

Happy August 1st everyone! How are you planning on spending the last few weeks of summer?

Maybe you should check out the Canine Carnival this weekend!

CanineCarnival

Syracuse is a relatively dog-friendly city. We’ve got a huge dog park where your pooch can go run around and pretend they’re capable of surviving without you.

This weekend, it’s all about them! It’s the 4th annual canine carnival at Longbranch Park, right at the Good Dog Park! This will be a great opportunity to adopt pets if they’re looking for something cute and cuddly, you could even get your dog groomed there! It’s a pet-friendly carnival with games, horse carriage rides, music, food, you name it!

And best of all, admission is free!

Gather your family and friends and take them to Longbranch Park this Saturday from 10am-3pm.

Tip: Reminder, if you’re bringing your pet with you they must remain on a leash the entire time!

location: Longbranch Park

206. Harborfest

harborfest

Every year at the end of July, Oswego throws the biggest party upstate NY has seen.

Featuring tons of live music, vendors, food, entertainment, the list goes on…Harborfest attracts a whole lot of people looking for a great time.

People can bring their boats and park them in the marina. From there, they wander the streets of Oswego looking for fun and entertainment, which is really everywhere.

I love Harborfest, when I was younger I loved it and as an adult it’s an entirely new experience. A lot of people come out for this celebration, and it’s a lot of fun.

It’s free to attend, it runs from today, July 25 to July 28th with the most exciting night being the 27th with the grand fireworks spectacular. This is a really fun weekend in Oswego, and even if it’s 30 minutes away from Syracuse it’s worth the drive… it’s going to be a really fun time with great weather! Don’t miss out! For all your harborfest information find it on their website here.

Harborfest has a tendency of becoming a big party with a lot of adult beverages, make sure you’ve got a Designated Driver. Police will be out in full force issuing tickets ranging from open container laws to drunk driving.

Tip: The best viewing for the Entergy “Fireworks Spectacular by Grucci” ranges from Fort Ontario on the east side of Oswego to the inner harbor and Breitbeck park areas on the west side.

201. Dining with Candlelight

candlelightThis particular event is important to me…it was basically the reason I decided to do this blog! This time last year, I was down in Armory Square with a few friends and we noticed Walton St. was closed… the closer we got the cooler this particular event looked.

There were tables scattered throughout the street, a live band, lots of people — friends, couples, first dates, neighbors gathering… it was really something quite amazing. But, I had never heard about it, and I didn’t know what it was… I thought it was a rally of some sort or something. It was then that I realized that Syracuse needed a blog like 365 Things Syracuse that would tell us what the heck that event really is!

I eventually learned it was an event called the Candlelight Series…and this year, the first one is tonight!

PS_74823_Candlelight series poster.indd

Tables and chairs are set up right in front of The MOST, Starbucks, Freedom of Espresso (that general area).

There are 3 specific weekends for the Candlelight Series…(and how they’re into the 29th annual & this is just my 2nd year of knowing it just goes to show how little informed I used to be!)  The 3 specific weekends for the Candlelight Series are July 20th, August 10th and August 17th. With live music performed by local musicians. This is 100% worth checking out.

This is FREE too..which is even better. There will be lots of tables set up, go with some friends, reserve a spot and enjoy the warm summer night with some candlelight and live music!

Tip: The events will move indoors to Benjamin’s if it rains!

location: Corner of West Jefferson and West Franklin Streets

181. Jazz Fest

More Jazz, please!

2013poster

Woohoo!

The 31st annual Jazz Fest is next weekend, July 4, 5 & 6th. What a great way to celebrate my favorite holiday! Heading to the Jazz Fest at Jamesville Beach!

Jazz Fest is awesome, it’s really unique. They bring in tons of local and national acts, this year’s big ticket is The Doobie Brothers (!!!!)

This is a fantastic way to spend the 4th of July holiday weekend, especially if you’re currently sitting around wondering, “what the heck am I going to do next weekend?!” This is it guys!

You can bring a cooler, some chairs, a blanket…or you can buy all your food & drinks at the Jazz fest from some of the vendors they’ll have there. You’ll be able to enjoy some live jazz music, catch up with friends, and peruse the various local artisans at the festival.

This is free to attend!! (Parking is not free though…)\

Tip: Bring some cash, there’s no free parking around.

location: Jamesville Beach

180. Film Under the Stars

Alongside Flicks on the Crick, there’s also a series presented by the Everson Museum throughout the months of July & August.

Film Under the Stars is an event held outside at the Everson Museum of Art.  A movie is projected onto the side of the building. Pretty spectacular.

everson under the stars
First of all, this is awesome.

Second of all, you can never have enough outdoor activities.

Once the snow is gone and the rain has subsided, Syracuse comes alive. We do everything we can to do as much as we can outdoors before we get stuck back inside.

The first screening was Wednesday –so we’ve missed it…but for the rest of July, and through August the movies are outside on Friday evenings. How awesome is this? How great to be able to enjoy a movie outdoors before headed to dinner in Armory Square, or even before! Dinner & a movie. This is a great great event!

The movie line-up is fantastic. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my all-time favorite flicks, and you can absolutely guarantee I will be there. Who wants to come with me?! Did I mention this is free?!

Friday July 12: Breakfast At Tiffany’s
Friday July 26: Toy Story
Friday August 15: The Blob

Like the Everson Museum on facebook, in case of rain they will update from there!

Tip: Bring lawn chairs and blankets and food with you to enjoy during the movies!

178. Flicks on the Crick

This is one of my favorite things to do all summer long! I’m so excited for it!

flicks on the crick

Flicks on the Crick is a simple event, they’re movies displayed on the side of The Sound Garden building…right along the creekwalk. This is a really great collaborative effort done by both The Sound Garden and the City of Syracuse to bring people together.

Plus there’s something really fun about watching movies outside.

Also, one of the perks to this is that it’s free!

They’re every Wednesday downtown during July & August. All that you’ve got to do is show up with a chair and some snacks and you’ll be set to watch some really great movies!

Movies they’re featuring this summer are
July 10th: Looper
July 17: TED
July 24: The Dark Knight
July 31: Flight
August 7: 21 Jump Street
August 14: Skyfall
August 21: Pitch Perfect
August 28: The Avengers

You can guarantee I’ll be going to see a few of these movies, especially 21 Jump Street and Pitch Perfect!

With Wednesdays on Walton and Flicks on the Crick, downtown Syracuse’s #1 night will definitely be Wednesdays.
Tip: Like Flicks On the Crick on facebook to learn more about the movies and events they’ll be holding throughout the summer!

location: The Sound Garden, Armory Square

177. Dewitt Concerts In The Park

Whether you live closer to Liverpool or Baldwinsville, Downtown or Dewitt there will be a summer concert series just for you this summer.

The Town of Dewitt has their own Concerts in the Park series starting July 11th. Each Thursday through the months of July & August pack up the car and head to the park, because the music is going to be awesome.

They’re held at Ryder Park from 6:30-8:30 and they’re free of charge!

Concert lineup is a good one!

July 18: Tom Gilbo & The Blue Suedes
July 25: Thunder Canyon Band
August 1: Dan Elliott & the Monterays
August 8: Maria DeSantis Band with Special Guests

Head down to Dewitt, Thursdays in July & August for some awesome entertainment! They’ll even have some concessions served by Applebees!
