Merry Christmas Eve everyone!
We all love a good cocktail hour. It’s something that we all spend time doing…whether you’re enjoying time with friends, grabbing an after-work libation or whatever it is…it’s become a culture.
I also find it very romantic…especially at a place like Al’s…especially when it’s snowing…it’s just…perfect.
As you may already know, I’ve got a certain love for history…it’s so fascinating and I’m obsessed. Which is why when I saw the Onondaga Historical Association was putting on an exhibit (that’s actually been up for some time now) on the Cocktail Hour, and more specifically the cocktail hour in Syracuse, NY. I knew it was something that I needed to check out.
OHA is always putting on these really intriguing displays of history and incorporating it into our city and I don’t think we give them enough credit!
The exhibit is up until June so you’ve got some time, but there’s something about the holidays that makes me nostalgic for the past.
Tip: Check out the Historical Associations walking tour too!
location: Onondaga History Museum
While we’re all aware that this place has some serious arts going on…from live music, to live productions, comedy, song and dance…there are a lot of VERY talented people here.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Baldwinsville, and I’m sure you’ve noticed that over the course of this year I featured a lot of cool things happening there. From the farmers markets, Beaver Lake, Paper Mill Island, The B’ville Diner…it’s just a quaint town perfect for people of all ages.
The Baldwinsville Theater Guild is putting on a live performance of everyone’s favorite Broadway show, Les Miserables.
The actual performances don’t start until January 24th but, considering this blog ends on December 31st, I thought it was important to promote it!
Tickets are $22 pre-sale, $25 at the door & $20 for students, call 315-887-8465 for tickets
Tip: Sera Bullis is performing in this production, she also sang at the US Open!
location: 64 Oswego Street
Guys…I just wanted to point out…we’re officially in single digits until the end of the year. Wow, time sure does fly…
Back during the summertime, I was introduced to Beer Belly Deli as a place I HAD to try out!
Well, this weekend you have to go…man, you’re really going to get some good use out of your ugly christmas sweater this weekend…
Why? Because there is a winter beer takeover on the taps AND you get $1 off if you’re wearing your ugly christmas sweater! Today until 3pm…Again…adults hanging out in hideous sweaters…it’s so funny!
Alongside the christmas tap takeover…BBD has some fantastic food…their sandwiches are SO GOOD!! Make sure you try it out!
Tip: Like them on facebook for more information!
location: 510 Westcott Street
It’s the first official day of Winter. Ahh, happy winter, all!
Wait…can you believe that in Syracuse, NY it snows…heavily….in the fall? Weird.
Whoever said Fall was their favorite season, they should rethink their decision!
It’s the weekend before Christmas, so I must ask…have you finished your shopping yet? If you have, congrats…you’re one of the lucky few who will not be at the mall scrambling to get those last minute stocking stuffers…that fake sand stuff at Brookstone is mesmerizing, fyi.
However, if you want to take a break from the mall and shopping, pull out Grandma’s old christmas sweater and make your way down to the Spark contemporary art space and have a good time!
I really feel like there’s nothing more amusing than a group of 20-30-somethings standing around in ugly christmas sweaters like it’s no big deal!
Tip: $5 at the door
Whenever I go to a bar, my friends and I migrate towards 1 or 2 things… 1) darts 2) pool.
I think it’s fun to play darts, even if I am quite possibly the worst at it… and I think it’s also fun to play pool too.
It’s something different!
Whenever anyone asks me “what can I do in Sryacuse tonight?” I always feel sort of put on the spot… “Haven’t you looked at 365 Things lately? There’s tons of stuff to do!” I tell them. And yet, they’re still asking me for those “date night specials” or “happy hours” or “best Reubens”
So lets try something new, shall we?
Salt City Billiards is in North Syracuse, has tons of pool tables and is fun to go and try something new. Mix it up a little!
They’ve got pool leagues, open play, tournaments…you name it, they got it! AND…it might be the cheapest place for a beer in CNY…$2.50 for bud lights?! I’m there!
Tip: Thursday nights they’ve got open pool play from 6-10 for $5!
Location: 3707 Brewerton Road
Has anyone been to DestiNY lately? A) Parking is not as bad as I thought (kudos to you, parking lot people…) B) There’s a whole bunch of fun happening there.
Just this week, World of Beer had their grand opening…and I’ve already been there twice!
Who woulda thought… But this is why…
They’ve got Fort Collins Brewery there…and there’s live music..and really great pub fare…it’s quickly going to become the #1 hot spot in Syracuse…so that’s cool.
While I love my traditional bars, like Kitty Hoynes, Als, Colemans, Blue Tusk and the like, WOB sure has a lot to offer! Like…there’s A LOT of beer there… on tap, in bottles…there’s just beer everywhere.
My friends have been participating in the “Mall Beer Crawl” …I think that’s the unofficial name. It’s where you go taste drinks from each bar/restaurant in the mall… and as the mall expands, the Mall Beer Crawl keeps getting longer and longer… and World of Beer is somewhere that will quickly be added to the official list, because it’s awesome.
Tip: It’s general seating, just gotta look out for an open table and grab it before someone else does! The place will always be busy.
On the other side of Onondaga Lake Park more technically known as Long Branch Park…away from the parkway, beyond the Lights on the Lake spectacular, sits a hill.
This hill has been home to some of the best sledding in Syracuse for years.
When I was younger, the neighbor kids would pile into the car and head to the “sledding hill” at Onondaga Lake Parkway…it’d be dotted with tons of kids exactly like us — barely able to move in our confining snow suits. However, once you got to the top of that hill and your friend pushed you forward…it was freedom for 30 seconds!
I don’t know if it’s just because I grew up in Syracuse and I’ve grown accustomed to the snow and the freezing…but I don’t think that cold weather should stop you from having fun.
This is an “unofficial” hill, there’s no check-in guy, no one to help you up (except a friendly fellow sledder), no tube or sled rentals…it’s just…original. And that’s what I love about it! (Unlike other tubing)
Tip: The sledding hill is open from 10am-5pm daily.
