If you’ve ever been to Hanover Square, you’ve most likely seen JJ’s Miss Syracuse Diner…or have you? If it’s after 2pm or a weekend, you’d most likely assume the diner was locked up years ago. The inside looks untouched, the signs on the windows are yellowing from old age, it looks like an abandoned old diner just sitting in the middle of Syracuse… but, what you might not realize, is that this tiny little diner, is actually still open for business.
I’ve always been fascinated by the Miss Syracuse diner… probably because I have a love for history and walking by it you can just imagine how cute and popular it could have been for breakfast or lunch 50 or 60 years ago. My partner in crime when it comes to blog research & I decided to take our chances for lunch one day and check it out…it was everything I thought it would be, and more. Click here to watch a short video on the diner!
From the moment I walked in I felt as though I was sitting on the set of Pleasantville. There are only a handful of booths available to sit at, a few tables, and a diner counter, a place to hang your coat next to your seat; and quick & friendly service.
An older woman, whom we thought might be a previous winner of a Miss Syracuse pageant, greeted us immediately. She was so nice, so welcoming, and didn’t even so much as make fun of me for ordering just 1 pancake…They had specials with a variety of flavor choices, from eggs to chicken and biscuits. The meal was quick, cheap, nostalgic…I had a great time dining at the Miss Syracuse diner, and strongly suggest trying it out some time. This is definitely a hidden gem in Syracuse!
Tip: This diner is not open on weekends, it operates from 7:30-2pm Monday thru Friday.
