12. The Shot Clock

They weren’t lying when they said that Syracuse is New York’s Sports team….whoever “they” are, they are 100% correct.

Here is the awesome thing about Syracuse Basketball… everyone tends to enjoy it! You’re never going to find someone around town who rolls their eyes and huffs and puffs when a game is on TV. (Unless they’re a Georgetown fan…and in that case, why are they even here?) Whether you’re a fan of the team or not you’re at least a fan of  Jim Boeheim. Who wouldn’t be? The guy is awesome.

With all of that being said, a pivotal part of downtown is the Shot Clock.

There is a shot clock in the center of Armory Square. If that doesn’t say something about the Basketball culture here, I don’t know what does.

The history behind the shot clock is quite remarkable. It was invented to get the game moving, the sport itself was losing fans left and right because of a sluggish pace throughout the game.  Without the shot clock, who knows if Basketball would even be popular today; it literally saved the sport.

Also, did you know there was a Professional Basketball team here at one point!?! Seriously, my mind is blown…I learn something new about this place everyday!

Next time you’re driving through Armory Square, take a look as the clock repeatedly counts down from 24 seconds and remind yourself why you love watching Syracuse Basketball.

Tip: It’s located directly across the street from The MOST.
